Clive Davis: Legendary Music Executive Who Helped Launch Generations of

June 22, 2026
Clive Davis was an influential American record executive, producer and talent scout whose career helped shape popular music across rock, soul, R&B and pop for more than six decades. Born on April 4, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York, Davis initially trained as a lawyer before entering the music business. He became president of Columbia Records in 1967, where he recognized the commercial and artistic potential of emerging performers and helped bring artists such as Janis Joplin, Bruce Springsteen, Santana and Billy Joel to wider audiences.

After leaving Columbia Records in 1973, Davis made a major comeback by founding Arista Records in 1974. There, he helped build the careers of Barry Manilow, Patti Smith and Whitney Houston, whose extraordinary voice and international success became closely associated with his career. He later founded J Records and continued working with major artists, including Alicia Keys. His ability to recognize promising talent across musical genres earned him the nickname “the man with the golden ears.”

Davis received multiple Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 in recognition of his contributions to the music industry. His influence extended beyond individual hit records: he helped connect artists with producers, songs and opportunities that brought their music to worldwide audiences. Davis died on June 22, 2026, at age 94, at his home in Manhattan, leaving behind a legacy that spans generations of popular music.
