Carolyn Bryant Donham: Woman at the Center of the Emmett Till Case Dies

April 25, 2023

Carolyn Bryant Donham was an American woman whose 1955 accusation against 14-year-old Emmett Till in Money, Mississippi, set off events that led to his abduction and murder and helped ignite the civil rights movement. She and her then-husband, Roy Bryant, ran a small grocery store where the encounter took place in August 1955.

At the 1955 trial of Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, who were acquitted of Till's murder by an all-white jury, she testified that Till had grabbed her and made advances. The judge ruled that part of her testimony inadmissible, so the jury did not hear it. Bryant and Milam later confessed in a magazine interview after their acquittal. In 2017 a historian reported that she had said parts of her story were untrue, which she and her family disputed.

In 2022 a Mississippi grand jury declined to indict her after a long-lost 1955 arrest warrant naming her was found, saying the evidence was insufficient. A memoir attributed to her was also leaked that year. She died on April 25, 2023, at age 88. Her death came after decades without any legal accountability, a fact that remains painful for Till's family and for many Americans.

Achievements: Testified in the 1955 trial of Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, who were acquitted (1955), her accusation precipitated the abduction and killing of Emmett Till (1955), subject of a 2022 grand jury that declined to indict her.

Birth: Born in the mid-1930s (age 88 at her death).

Profession: Grocery store clerk.

Interesting Facts: Emmett Till's open-casket funeral, ordered by his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, drew national attention and galvanized the civil rights movement. Her accusation was the spark for the case.
